Refocusing Our Relationships

Jesus says in John 13,  “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” It is vitally important that we view all of our relationships through this lense. This is how Jonathan treated his relationship with David. Jonathan could have easily gone a different way, but he chose to resist isolating himself or making things all about himself.

Read 1 Samuel 18:1-4. Jonathan resisted the temptation to keep to himself, even if it may have been easier to do so. Instead, he loved David as himself.

• What does it look like to love someone as yourself?
• Do you have the tendency to lean towards isolation? If so, explain.

Read 1 Samuel 18:5-9, 19:1-4, and 20:30-33. Jonathan resisted the temptation to make it all about himself.

• How can you care for others at the same time you are facing difficult challenges?
• Have you ever had a friend care for you in the way Jonathan cared for David? If so, explain.
