Facing Down Giants

1 Samuel 17

When reading famous stories from the Old Testament it’s important to note that there are three ways to approach them. You can approach them through a historical lens, an applicational lens, and an incarnational lens. This week, Pastor Jim walked us through each approach, and for our purposes we will discuss the applications of the story of David and Goliath.

• Read 1 Samuel 17:32-33. David refused to lose heart, even though he was faced with a humanly impossible task. Instead, he chose to put his trust in the Lord.

• When faced with giants in your life, how do you tend to respond?
• What does it look like to put your trust in God when facing a seemingly impossible task?

• Read 1 Samuel 17:40. Instead of running away in fear, David went into battle knowing the Lord was behind him.

• Just because we trust the Lord does not mean we won’t ever deal with fear. But how can you overcome fear, and instead of running away from a difficult situation, run towards it?

• Read 1 Samuel 17:45,47. David believed that the battle against Goliath was God’s battle and not his own. How does this fact reassure you when facing your giants?

Prayer Focus: Take time to pray over one another’s needs and speak the name of Jesus over the battles that are ahead.
